The frequency of postings has declined over the past year. Those of you who know me on Facebook and Twitter also know I am fairly active there. Longtime readers, or rather, the friends I’ve made while I was posting regularly, will know that I tend to put a lot of thought into my blog posts. For the regular news from my life, Facebook and Twitter have been my outlets. I’m sure the time I spend chatting with friends or leaving witty comments on people’s status updates could’ve been used to craft a dozen or so blog posts over the past year.

Guitar Center

After moving to Tennessee, I wasn’t very picky about job prospects. I knew I needed to get a job ASAP. I wasn’t really interested in working at a music store again, but I had experience and knowledge to do it. Guitar Center was the first place that offered me a job, and it turned out to be a much better place to work than I had initially imagined. I am in control of how much I earn. I have fun every day. I work with a great bunch of guys and gals. I have announced to upper management that Guitar Center is part of my long-term plans.

Being around musicians and people who love music has reawakened the desire to play again. This time around, I’m going to refresh my piano playing skills. The keyboard excites me now. Guitar doesn’t do it for me like it used to.

No More Amazon.com Goodies

Due to my employment at Guitar Center, my involvement with the Amazon Associates program would constitute a conflict of interest. Yes, Amazon.com sells musical instruments. Of course, I would much rather you buy from Guitar Center. I quietly terminated the Amazon goodness a while ago, but haven’t gotten around to announcing the end of a good run.

Final Thoughts for the Day

Most people probably stopped reading about 200 words ago. Put “Facebook” in the title of a blog post or mention social media, and it’s instant link-bait. If you’re still with me, that probably means you’re a stalker or immune to the rampant ADD in our society today.

This blog isn’t going away. It’s just become more like a quarterly newsletter than a blog. There is plenty in the archives for new dads. I still get a fair amount of traffic based on the strength of some of my posts.

I still schedule posts to go live at 8:07. 8/07 is Twilli’s birthday. 8:07pm in 24-hour format is 20:07. Twilli was born in 2007.

It’s so cliché, but it’s so true. Having children sends you into a vortex where space and time get grossly distorted. My truest of true loves turns 2 today.

I never heard a more beautiful sound than her first cries as she made her <a href="http://www.21stcenturyparenting.com/2007/11/12/how-to-have-a-3-minute-baby-a-true-story-about-a-rapid-and-easy-natural-labor-and-birth/"title="21st Century Parenting - Three Minute Baby" target="_self" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.21stcenturyparenting.com/2007/11/12/how-to-have-a-3-minute-baby-a-true-story-about-a-rapid-and-easy-natural-labor-and-birth/');">explosive entry into the world. She was so tiny, delicate, and precious. I could be happy freezing any given moment and having her stay that way forever, yet I daydream about what she’d be like as a 2 year old, 5 year old, pre-teen, teenager, and a young woman. Time would stand still, especially when she was throwing one of her epic tantrums. Then we’d reach a milestone and realize how fast it all seemed to have gone by.

The first year was marked by dramatic physical changes. She grew to 3 times her birth weight. All that thick dark hair fell out and was slowly replaced by her current golden-brown locks. <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/2008/02/28/first-tooth/"title="21st Century Dad - Twilli's first tooth" target="_self" >She cut her first teeth. She was one super-duper chubby-wubby obviously-breast-fed baby for a while. She started crawling, then cruising, then she took her tentative first steps without help from mommy or daddy.

Between ages 1 and 2, it gets really interesting. She is growing cognitively. The rate of physical growth slows, but continues. She looks so tiny and so huge all at the same time. Twilli started to talk. She could say a few words. You could clearly ascertain from the context that she knew what she was talking about vs. mimicking what she hears.

“Pretty!”

“More? More?”

“No.”

“Nurse! NURSE! NURSE!”

“Ooh, what’s this?”

“Daddy!”

“Mommy!”

Our relationship has moved into a new phase. We are communicating verbally. Lengthier conversational volleys are on the horizon.

As much as there is to teach, I have learned so much. I have opened my eyes to my own Korean heritage. I continue to eat garlic and insanely spicy food in large quantities. Twilli also enjoys some pretty spicy food for a toddler. There are many more lessons in store for me.

I would be completely remiss if I didn’t post today. I want to shout out to a couple of guys who will be celebrating their first ever Father’s Days:

Pat, Chris, and Brandon (you guys know who you are). Welcome to the club! You think changing dirty diapers is fun now, wait til they start getting squirmy.

When I started this blog, I enjoyed the ad-hoc social network created around bloggers in one’s niche and interests. Now my social networking time is spent on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/elliottkim"title="My Facebook" target="_self" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.facebook.com/elliottkim');">Facebook, <a href="http://twitter.com/21stcenturydad"title="Twitter - the purpose of Twitter isn't to tell the world you're pooping." target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://twitter.com/21stcenturydad');">Twitter, and <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/elliottkim"title="My public LinkedIn profile" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.linkedin.com/in/elliottkim');">LinkedIn.

With the transition from Florida to Tennessee, some plates stopped spinning. Some balls got dropped. My voice is even lower now. I get enough positive encouragement to continue this blog, albeit on a very sparse posting schedule. I’ve connected with several people through it, and continue to connect. Many of those connections have been carried through to my “big three” social networking sites. Is that kind of like owning the same album on 8-track, LP, cassette, CD, and mp3? Okay, I may not be old enough to have an 8-track player, but I do remember them. If I’m too old to shop at Abercrummy and Filth, then I’m certainly old enough to remember 8-tracks, or at least LPs.

Today is Father’s Day, a celebration of fatherhood and another opportunity for <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2F&tag=21stcenturydad-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325"title="Amazon.com" target="_self" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2F&tag=21stcenturydad-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325');">retailers to hawk their wares. While it’s a day to buy yet another barbecue grill set or another tie he won’t wear, <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/2008/06/15/happy-fathers-day/"title="Happy Father's Day" target="_self" >it’s a day to be the best dad you can be. Turn it up a notch or two, or three.

Say hi to some of these great dads out there in the blogosphere. Most are dad bloggers, but some are bloggers who happen to be dads.

When we last left off here, I was preparing to move to Tennessee. A master of the obvious will tell you that I’m already here.

It has been a mostly painless transition. Taking care of things like getting a Tennessee driver’s license, registering my car (yes, I have a car now!), and getting administrivia taken care of is much easier in The Volunteer State.

You Live Where?

If you tell anyone who doesn’t live in Tennessee that you live anywhere else but Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and maybe Chatanooga, they think you live way out in the middle of nowhere.

The Job Market

Knox County has about 1/3rd of the population of Broward County and an even smaller fraction of what’s considered South Florida. One would think jobs would be even more scarce. It’s not the case. Take all the available jobs in South Florida. Subtract the ones that require you to speak Spanish. Now compare the job markets in Knoxville and South Florida. 1-0 Knoxville! If you include Oak Ridge, then prospects start looking better.

I wouldn’t mind having a regular job here. The pay is much more in line with the cost of housing here. With the pay scale being very close and a lower overall cost of living, it’s Knoxville 2, South Florida 0.

I could always use another freelance client. Know anyone who needs help with PowerPoint?

Culture Shock

I never knew customer service could be so good! Add a little southern charm and a smile, and your trip to Starbucks is just that much more pleasant. They say the pace of life is slower in the South. It has to be. The first 3 minutes of every conversation is almost always jockeying back and forth with different ways to say “how are you?” and “I’m doing fine, thank you!”

I stopped by Target in Clinton last week. (Again, Clinton sounds like it’s way out there. In reality, it’s only about 10 miles from Knoxville). I was looking around and Marisa Tomei’s voice spoke one of the many memorable lines from My Cousin Vinny. “Oh, you blend!” Within seconds of having that thought, I spy an entire Asian family. There’s a stronger Asian presence here than you would think!

I Don’t Need no Stinkin’ GPS

If I get a GPS, I’ll never learn my way around! I am a bit of a throwback. As connected to technology and web 2.0 as I am, the inner curmudgeon sits on my shoulder and speaks very loudly when I pass by the GPS units at the Super WalMart.

South Florida is laid out like a grid. Knoxville looks like what would happen if your toddler played Sim City. Planning ahead, Google Maps, maps of Oak Ridge and Knoxville, and I’m doing just fine.

Bad Drivers Are Everywhere

Ask anyone where the worst drivers are. They will invariably tell you it’s where they live. I’m disguised as a local, complete with a Tennessee license plate on a Jeep Grand Cherokee. You probably think that bad driver is a local. It’s really me – a recent transplant. I still have to say, South Florida wins this nefarious honor by a landslide. I turn on my blinker and in Tennessee, that means, “the car with the blinker on wants to turn or change lanes.” In Florida it means, “Let me finish typing this text message while I juggle my coffee and Mapquest printout.”

Quittin’ Time

It’s hard to believe that I’m finally getting on the road next week. Today was my last day at the job, and now I’m officially an “unrestricted free agent.” One might think there are fewer opportunities in a less populated metropolitan area. However, if you don’t include the jobs in South Florida that require fluency in Spanish, Knoxville probably comes out ahead by a wide margin.

Movin’ Out

Mama Leone left a note on the door. She said, “Sonny, move to Tennessee.” Or something like that…

I have about a gazillion things to do. It feels like there’s a never-ending avalanche of stuff. I’ve been in this house for almost 10 years. How can so much stuff accumulate if the Super Target by my house has only been open for 2 years?

I’ve shared this house with my mother, 5 different roommates, Renee, 4 cats, Austin, and Twilli. Throughout the process of packing and purging, I’ve found items brought into this house by all of the people who have shared this house with me.

Vacuum Sealed for Freshness

Packing is a monumental task made only slightly less monumental with vacuum-seal storage bags. I compressed a king-size down duvet into a package the size of a briefcase!

I especially like the hanging suit bags. Back in December during phase 1 of the relocation, we packed up Twilli’s stuffed animals in a Space Bag. For whatever reason, the vacuum-sealed stuffed animals inspired a strange fascination. It was borderline morbid.

These vacuum-seal bags work great for storage too. There are only 2 seasons in Florida – summer and tourist. I didn’t need to store any winter clothes. These vacuum-seal bags are great for stashing your seasonal clothing. Winter clothes are bulky. Plus, you can lock in their freshness, just like those bricks of coffee you buy at the supermarket.

I do have to offer up a word of caution. One of my roommates used these when she was going home to Sweden. They expanded in her suitcase during the flight!

Hitting the Road

I don’t anticipate being able to do much writing over the next several weeks. However, you can catch up with me via Facebook and Twitter. Those social media outlets are far easier to update on the fly and during random spare moments. I will definitely be Tweeting from the road next week.

Mom and dad bloggers can get away with disappearing for weeks at a time. I’m anxiously awaiting updates from some of my favorite moms and dads in the blogosphere. Where are you?!?!?!

21st Century Dad is moving in a new direction which is following the course correction my life has taken. I will continue to write about topics of interest to all dads in addition to garnering fellowship with divorced and separated dads. An article about time management is coming up very soon. I didn’t want to spring that on you in the midst of the <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/category/ctrl-alt-del/"title="21st Century Dad - Cagetory CTRL-ALT-DEL" target="_self" >CTRL-ALT-DEL stuff without an introduction.

Seitan Worshiper

Seitan steak'n'cheese sandwich

As some of you know, I’ve been exploring vegetarianism and veganism lately. I made my own <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seitan"title="seitan on Wikipedia" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seitan');">seitan for the first time last night. It’s incredibly fun and easy to make. An investment of just under $4 yields 3 pounds. How much meat can you buy for $4, or what kind of meat is available for $1.33/pound?

Seitan allows me to enjoy the gooey goodness of a <a href="http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2007/11/vegan-philly-cheese-steak.html"title="Vegan Dad - Vegan Philly Cheesesteak" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2007/11/vegan-philly-cheese-steak.html');">“steak” and cheese sandwich. Thanks to <a href="http://vegandad.blogspot.com/"title="Vegan Dad" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://vegandad.blogspot.com/');">Vegan Dad for the recipe.

My experimentation with tofu and now seitan will keep me busy in the kitchen for a long time. My mind is already racing with the possibilities.

Dad Blogs

My philosophy is to put more effort into fewer social media sites than spread myself too thin. You can stay very busy just working Facebook. Despite this, <a href="http://www.dad-blogs.com"title="Dad Blogs - Directory and Social Network for Dads and Dad Bloggers" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.dad-blogs.com');">Dad Blogs has earned a bookmark in my browser.

As a social networking site, it has all the features you would want to use. My favorite feature of Dad Blogs is the Instant Chat. It’s like having our own private little <a href="http://twitter.com/21stcenturydad"title="Follow me on Twitter - 21st Century Dad" target="_self" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://twitter.com/21stcenturydad');">Twitter.

Joe Schatz (you may know him as <a href="http://joeprah.com/"title="Joeprah" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://joeprah.com/');">Joeprah) and Pete Janelle created this social networking site for dads and dad bloggers. It’s not a total sausage-fest. A few super-cool moms move the male/female ratio closer to that of any college with the word “Polytechnic” in its name.

You don’t need to have a blog to join.

New Friends

And now for some overdue link love. You may notice some of these as recent additions to the blogroll.

<a href="http://moneysmartmarriage.com/"title="Money Smart Marriage" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://moneysmartmarriage.com/');">Money Smart Marriage – JW shares his insights on personal finance from a family point of view. Lots of good stuff here. <a href="http://moneysmartmarriage.com/2008/11/03/eight-frugal-date-ideas-for-husbands-and-wives/"title="Money Smart Marriage - Eight Frugal Date Ideas" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://moneysmartmarriage.com/2008/11/03/eight-frugal-date-ideas-for-husbands-and-wives/');">Frugal date ideas aren’t just for husbands and wives. Dads paying child support feel the pinch too.

<a href="http://fraizerbaz.blogspot.com/"title="Open Seven Days A Week. Closed Sundays." target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://fraizerbaz.blogspot.com/');">Open seven days a week. Closed Sundays. – Generation-X Christian woman, and a single mother of a wonderful little princess. I love her sense of humor. “I’m going to live forever or die trying!!!” HAHAHAH. She also knows about <a href="http://fraizerbaz.blogspot.com/2008/08/things-you-need-to-know-about-your-car.html"title="Open seven days a week. Closed Sundays. - Car maintenance" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://fraizerbaz.blogspot.com/2008/08/things-you-need-to-know-about-your-car.html');">proper care and maintenance of automobiles.

<a href="http://savvystepmom.blogspot.com/"title="Savvy Stepmom" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://savvystepmom.blogspot.com/');">Savvy Stepmom – I thought back to when I was 24 and all the 24 year olds I’ve known since. Few are as savvy with money or as resourceful. This woman drives a car that doesn’t have a functioning reverse gear and gets by just fine.

The Broward County Transit Diet

Clean Air Hybrid

The popular perception in South Florida is that a car is a necessity. I’ve been doing OK with the bus and my bike. I take full advantage of Google Maps and <a href="http://www.google.com/transit"title="Google Transit" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.google.com/transit');">Google Transit to plan my outings. One day, I ran errands all day and made it to a 7pm movie downtown, all without a car. I’ve lost 10 pounds after losing 3000 lbs back in July. The crunchy green part of my heart sings whenever I see the “Clean Air Hybrid” buses that BCT operates. Their buses run on a biodiesel too.

The increased physical activity has also helped my overall mood too. I don’t want to think about where I’d be without exercise, good nutrition, and medication.

Now my capabilities here have been improved dramatically.

My objective here is to maintain my presence on Facebook and Twitter via mobile phone while doing the bus thing. <a href="http://www.busydadblog.com/entries/leap-of-faith-friday-homies-on-a-train.html"title="The Busy Dad Blog - Leap of Faith Friday" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.busydadblog.com/entries/leap-of-faith-friday-homies-on-a-train.html');">Busy Dad started his blog to pass the time commuting on the LA Metro. FB’ing and Tweeting on the go will free up time for other activities when I am sitting at the computer. Maybe I can update this blog more often. Maybe you can just catch up with me via Facebook and <a href="http://twitter.com/21stcenturydad"title="21st Century Dad on Twitter" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://twitter.com/21stcenturydad');">Twitter.

Ring Tones Are For Losers

I want to know why people balk at purchasing songs on iTunes or at Amazon for $0.99 but will pay up to $4 for a ringtone? The Amazon download is DRM-free, can be played at any time, and on any stereo system you have access to. With ringtones, you hear only part of the song out of a crappy little speaker when someone calls or text messages you.

Speak Up on Twitter About Your Woes

Cell phone carriers aren’t known for their top-notch customer service. I complained on Twitter about my recent experiences with Sprint. A Sprint rep on Twitter responded to me immediately and offered to help. I didn’t even have to pull out the big guns – “May I speak with your supervisor.”

More and more companies are on Twitter. They’re looking to keep their good names good by sending their sentinels out after us, er, I mean, they’re listening to us in the places we hang out online.

Alternative Transportation

My ride to work is on paternity leave. Looks like I’m taking the bus all week. I’m glad to have upgraded to mobile web access on my phone

A suburban setting is a tough place to live without a car. The landscape gets really sprawly as you go further west in Broward County. I am at the supermarket 2-3 times a week instead of making one big trip a week. Cargo capacity is limited when you’re on the bike.

Selling stuff on eBay presents a logistical challenge. There’s a limit to the number and overall bulk of packages I can haul at one time to the post office. When I first started selling on eBay 6 years ago, there were times when I chose to ride my bike instead of drive to the post office. I did it once before, so I know I can do it again.

Entre Card Users

I haven’t been active on Entre Card lately. I got a great boost in traffic when the blog was new and I found some great blogs. It’s one of the things I am choosing to let go of in the name of simplifying my life. Some of these bloggers have left Entre Card and some remain.

Without my active participation, I still accumulate credits. I already have a good stash I can give away to other Entre Card users. As I procrastinate on the task of running some sort of blog contest involving Entre Card credits, the credits continue to pile up. Look for some sort of giveaway or contest in the future. If you’ve left Entre Card, leave a comment and let me know what you did with your leftover credits.

The War Against Clutter

Getting the UHaul and taking a pile of books to <a href="http://www.mckaybooks.com/"title="McKay Used Books and CDs" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.mckaybooks.com/');">McKay Used Books was phase 1 in the war on clutter. Phase 2 sees the use of eBay, craigslist, <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/2007/12/04/get-stuff-for-free-freesource-and-the-freecycle-network/"title="21st Century Dad - FreeCycle and Freesource" target="_self" >FreeCycle, Goodwill and word of mouth. Phase 3 is bulk trash day. I’m still a long way from reducing my belongings to what will fit inside a medium-sized SUV.

Perhaps foreclosure is like “the bomb” that ends the war. How appropos that I am looking to move to Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Much of the work on the Manhattan Project took place in “The Secret City.”

Holiday Insanity

I am certainly not an exception. Who am I to think I would escape the frenzied pace at this time of year? It was more frenzied than I could have ever imagined leading up to and through this 2008 holiday season. I alluded to some of this insanity in my last post. Now I’m going to blog about it.

Has it got any sports in it?

Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…

Yes, it’s all true, except for the fencing, torture, and revenge.

I’ve Been Tagged Again

<a href="http://www.dtemama.com/"title="Down-To-Earth Mama" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.dtemama.com/');">Down To Earth Mama has tagged me again, hoping to uncover more of what she calls an <a href="http://www.dtemama.com/what/passing-the-torch"title="Down To Earth Mama - Passing The Torch" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.dtemama.com/what/passing-the-torch');">enigma. The last time she tagged me, I didn’t bite. This time, I must come through.

“Oh blogger, will you post a photo?”

As you wish.

The punk-ass that she is, she tagged me after I just spent 20 hours on a Greyhound bus!

No, this isn’t the first photo I took. Shooting into a mirror is tricky. However, this photo is completely unedited except for resizing. I didn’t even fix the white balance or Photoshop out the convenient carrying handle attached to my head.

Here are the rules….

1) Take a picture of yourself right NOW!
2) DON’T change your clothes, DON’T fix your hair… Just take a picture.
3) Post that picture with NO editing.
4) Post these instruction with your picture.
5)Tag 10 8 people to do this..

I don’t want to tag 10 people either. That’s a LOT, unless you’re über-popular like <a href="http://www.busydadblog.com"title="The Busy Dad Blog" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.busydadblog.com');">Busy Dad. I see that he’s already been tagged by <a href="http://daddyusdorkus.blogspot.com/"title="Daddyus Dorkus" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://daddyusdorkus.blogspot.com/');">Joe.

It’s a long story worthy of more attention than the time I can give it right now.
We lost two cats this year. <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/2008/07/23/goodbye-portnoy/"title="Goodbye Portnoy" target="_self" >Portnoy left us in July. <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/2008/12/19/james-2002-2008/"title="Goodbye James" target="_self" >James is now chasing the laser pointer in kitty heaven.

I spend a fair amount of time crafting posts. Any spare time and energy I have must be devoted to handling my personal affairs right now. You can still catch up with me on <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/2008/11/18/mobile-connectivity-solutions-for-social-media/"title="21st Century Dad - Mobile Connectivity Solutions for Social Media" target="_self" >Facebook and Twitter.
