It’s Been A Very Good 15 Years
July 13th, 2008 . by 21st Century DadI’ve Been Tagged!
JoJo at BuddhaBelle has tagged me with this meme. When I hit her blog the other day, I could hear the rattle of the little metal ball and the swoosh swoosh of paint inside the can. In my long and illustrious blogging career, I’d only been tagged once before. If you see a Mongolian woman wearing a hoodie and carrying a backpack, tell her I said hi.
Think back on the last 15 years of your life. What would you tell someone that you hadn’t seen or talked to for 15 years? How would you sum up your life?
You get 10 bullet points. A list of 10 things to summarize you. At the end of your list, tag 5 more people and send on the love.
I found a ton of people I knew from high school on Facebook, but it’s still a great feeling to run into someone randomly while you’re out and about. It’s not such a great feeling when it’s at a place where the front windows have bright neon and are otherwise blacked out. I don’t know this from first-hand personal experience, but you get the idea.
15 years ago, I was in at the University of Maryland, living in the Zeta Psi fraternity house. We were the nerd frat, so I don’t have too many juicy stories.
- I have a beautiful 11 month old baby girl and a 14 year old stepson. They’re the best! My daughter can say “dada dada babadaba dada abba.” She loves me and she loves Swedish pop music. She’s already cruisin’. Any day now…
- I moved back home to Florida in ’95.
- I live in Davie now. Yeah, the redneck part. Yeah, you know, where all the buildings have a western theme. There’s even a rodeo arena. When I met my wife, she experienced total culture shock.
- Yup. Cut off all my hair. It was down past the middle of my back before I gave it to Locks of Love.
- I got totally hooked on Dream Theater. They’ve become my favorite band.
- Yeah, I still play a little guitar. My stepson plays, and it’s been fun teaching him a few things.
- I got into photography again. I bought a digital camera so I could sell stuff on eBay, but I started taking more pictures. I hated how it takes forever after pressing the shutter to get a picture and I missed the creative control I had with my old SLR film camera. I bought a Nikon D70 a while back. Now I have the D80 and I love it.
- My wife and I started a web and graphic design business a couple years ago. We’re changing things up a little, choosing to work with only a few select clients, diversifying our efforts to include PowerPoint presentations, photography, and blogging.
- My wife and I both have parenting blogs. I write 21stCenturyDad.com and she writes at 21stCenturyParenting.com.
- She’s also making baby carriers. She adapted a traditional Korean podegi, and incorporated some design features from the really pimped out Scandinavian style mei tais. Her unique selling proposition is to use vintage reclaimed fabric for the decorative parts. One of the best features is when she salvages old pants to make functional pockets. It’s so much better than using a stroller. She can multi-task like crazy and the baby loves it.

Thanks for the shout out and I will have my answers up very soon… come on over and take a peek. Great to learn more about you Elliott!
Looks like it’s been a good 15 years
I actually had to answer this question the other day when i ran into someone i used to know at the store. (It was only 8 years, but still a long time!)
Just wanted to say thank you for reading and commenting over at Kimchi Mamas! Not everyone leaves their calling card, so I try to say “an-yung” at least once to those who do.
Your thoughts on parenting also ring familiar … the Dalai Lama came to Chicago some years ago (I was not there, but a family member relayed this back to me). During the Q&A, someone asked, how do I raise good children? The answer. “Be a good person first.” The lady didn’t get it … but, you are very enlightened, my friend.
Wow I can’t imagine you with that long hair and it’s such a good thing you donated to Locks of Love. LC and Twilli both doing the cruising thing, hopefully she’ll take her first step soon, my friends with a boy the same age say that he’s already walking, I guess boys start walking first and I heard girls start talking first. Cool graffiti!
Oh boy…15 years ago? I was barley a kid (I’m only 30 now)! So much has happened in that time…I’m going to have to think about this one. It should be interesting.
