Random Thoughts and Link Roundup: Early Adopters and Twitter Edition

July 12th, 2008 . by 21st Century Dad

Portnoy, the crazy kitty cat

This is Portnoy. He hasn’t been himself lately and I think something is wrong. I am taking him to the vet ASAP. Please send him some prayers and positive thoughts.

Twitter

I am an early adopter of many things. It’s a natural human desire to be the first person to do something. Dad of Divas prompted me to join Twitter and I am having a blast. I have already found several of my regular blogger buddies and made some new friends. The toilet seat spurred a lot of comments and tweets. I thought for sure the hand-fart guy would be more popular. Pragmatism wins over sheer laughs.

New Friends, New Sites

Finding great new sites is a high and a letdown. You find something really cool, blog about it, then 20 people tell you it’s old news! It’s all part of that natural desire to be the first one to find something cool. Discovering Dad, Joeprah, and The Busy Dad Blog would fall under the, “Guess what I found!!!! Oh….” category. But I’m cool. They’re following me on Twitter.

The Busy Dad Blog

Jim Lin writes a fine blog. Like many dad bloggers, he started offering parenting tips. Then he transitioned to his personal accounts of fatherhood when he discovered that his posts about Fury were so wildly popular. (Jared at DadThing.com made a similar shift on his blog.) We’re both Asian-American dudes with dad blogs. Our blogs are about the same age. We both like to cook. There are so many similarities, you’d think he was the Chinese knock-off of 21st Century Dad.

Mama Nuggle

A special thanks to Jeremy at Discovering Dad for introducing me to her. Mama Nuggle is brand new to blogging. You will definitely enjoy your visit to her site. I met them both on Twitter. Jeremy writes one of the best dad blogs around. His new site theme looks great. It’s a “magazine style” WordPress theme similar to what Tyler at Building Camelot has implemented. Tyler’s new blog design is awesome. Suddenly, the randomly changing header image on my blog doesn’t seem as cool anymore.

Old Friends, New Sites

I started reading Frugal Dad before he was popular. Nya nya nya. :P Frugal Dad is on FIRE!!! He got 72,766 page views in June! He just launched the Frugal Dad Forums earlier this week. Don’t fight your natural human urge to be an early adopter. Join the discussion and learn how to save money. In the last edition of Sunday Conversation, Frugal Dad answered the question I submitted.

Old Sites Looking for New Friends

Lori and Jeremy weren’t the first husband and wife blogging team. Neither was Renee and Elliott. Renee writes at 21st Century Parenting. I keep 21st Century Dad as on-topic as possible. Renee and Elliott is where I post off-topic stuff and experiment with blogging. A post about teaching your teenager how to use public transit is much more relevant to a dad blog than one that specifically addresses Broward County Transit Riders. Go ahead and read it because I show you how to use Google Transit. They update the list with new cities and transit systems regularly.

I may not have been an early adopter of Twitter, but I started riding the bus long before gas was even $3.00 a gallon.

Thanks for write-up! Although, I’m still not sure I qualify as “popular!” It’s been a journey, and I’ve enjoyed having you along. Hopefully the forums will expand into a place where folks can come to share positive money experiences, answer questions, etc. I’ll let the mainstream media handle all the negative news.

I appreciate the mention about my new design. I’m glad Chris got you to use Twitter…it can seem overwhelming at times but it’s nice to have contact with folks outside of your blog.

Oh…and I like your rotating header!

Wow! Great write up. Thanks, and I’m really glad you have joined Twitter! I’ll have to check out your wife’s blog/writing too. Fun stuff!

Whoop Whoop! My first meme (aside from those done by Jeremy!) Thanks for the shout outs and the recommendation and for trying to send your legions of friends my way! You rock!

Thanks for the shout out…I did not realize that I was the one to get you connected to Twitter…but it is a bit adddicting… I have to watch myself not to get too engrossed… Great write up and I too like your rotating header!

Regardless of coming late to the whole Twitter party, you are cutting edge. Alright, maybe not quite cutting edge, but lets just say you get it right.

I hope your kitty is ok! He looked a tad perturbed in that pic.
