Pediatric Associates – Ariana’s 4-month Checkup

December 13th, 2007 . by admin

Ariana with Dr. Juan Reyes of Pediatric AssociatesToday, I made small-talk with a woman who stuck sharp metal objects into my child. It was time for her 4-month checkup and the next round of vaccinations for Twilli. I’m happy to report that she is doing very well. She has now grown to 15 pounds and 24.5 inches! Our observations were confirmed by Dr. Reyes. Twilli is a strong and healthy baby.

After Twilli’s last visit to the doctor, I did a write-up on choosing a pediatrician over at 21st Century Parenting. That article was an overview on how to choose a pediatrician. Over at Renee And Elliott, I covered the more personal side of our relationship with Pediatric Associates.

During today’s visit, the first thing I noticed today was a humongous binder at the front desk with information on the recent rash of toy recalls. I have been silent on the topic, but it’s not out of ignorance. I am humble enough to know that this isn’t the only blog you read. (Admit it. You’ve got DaddyTypes open in another browser tab pandering to stroller lust). So many others are covering it, and probably doing it better than I could. Pediatric Associates has a big box smack in the middle of their homepage with pertinent links about toy recalls and lead exposure.

Ah, but I digress. Today’s topic is vaccinations. At first, the wife and I were hesitant. We know we can’t jump at every warning given to parents, but this one held our attention long enough to postpone the vaccination process until the two month mark. Dr. Reyes assured us that Pediatric Associates uses only the highest quality vaccines and they are all mercury-free.

Now I know the real reason there’s 3 rounds of rotavirus vaccine. It’s orally administered and Twilli spit up most of it.

For most vaccines, there is nothing mythical or proprietary about them. Perhaps it’s this fear of the unknown that has stopped many parents from vaccinating. A vaccine is just weakened or dead microorganisms. Your immune system doesn’t know the difference between the vaccine and the real virulent version. Your doctor is giving you the flu when you get a flu shot! In its weakened state, it’s not as debilitating as the full-blown disease. Your immune system sees the pathogen and remembers its signature. The next time you encounter said pathogen, BAM! White blood cells – 2. Flu virus – 0.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers an Instant Childhood Immunization Scheduler on their website. Plug in your child’s birth date, then it gives you a schedule from birth to 12 years.
